It's interesting that the most 'honest' performance of Gulda's Cello Concerto on You Tube is the 1988 recording with Gulda conducting (in an outlandishly overdone fashion - yet admirably effective!) and Heinrich Schiff as soloist. Schiff puts heart and soul (and everything else) into his rendition of the solo part and the Münchner Philharmoniker wind players plus acoustic guitar and drums are sublime - although the oboes mikes were a little on the quiet side and you have to strain to hear them. As I say, it is a real 'gold standard' which all other performances of Gulda's zany hotch-potch jazz/classical/Austrain folk and 'oompah band' music have to be measured against! (And good luck with that - it is such a hard act to follow!)
Sorry I realise now it wasn't your comment. But see the comment by Michael Wilke. It is possible to enjoy a piece without smiling. It is of course easier to smile if you are a top musician in full technical control (like Perlman, Ma and Shaham)
It's true, Perlman probably smiles more than many others. YoYo Ma also has a good sense of humour. I still think your initial comment about the cellist taking it too seriously was unfair and unwarranted
Of course they do not smile all the time, and it depends of the works. I don't think Shaham would smile while playing Sibelius' violin concerto 1st movement. But Perlman, for instance, often smiles when he is playing virtuosic works such as Bazzini's or Paganini's.
Not all the time; it depends what they are playing! It's a bit unreasonable and unnecessary to expect musicians to smile when they are concentrating on per4forming to the best of their ability. There are plenty of occasions when all those you have mentioned do not smile.
Oh, sorry.It was composed for Schiff, you can hear a bit his playing in a documentary here on youtube. This guy and many other play this very well but probably don´t come up to that frenetical palying mr Schiff produces in the beginning. This concerto is a parody, don´t you think.
